The land of opportunity has become the land of no-fault, "pass the buck" and an overwhelming victim mentality. Conesequences are for the real criminals, not people who are victims of circumstances.
"So, my kid doesn't know math. Don't mess with his self-esteem. Pass him anyway and tell him what a great kid he is. I know he doesn't listen, doesn't care and is rude. But if you hurt his poor little self-esteem then I'll pull out my get-rich-quick card and sue the tar out of you."
What do we expect of CEOs in this sort of landscape? "It's not my fault. Help us out. We might have to shut the doors. Oh, I know we didn't save when we could have. I know our employees are overpaid. We've enjoyed some really good years. We thought it would last forever. But, alas, it's blown up and we can't put the pieces together again. Help, we've fallen and can't get up. Yea, we still have bad math. But we really don't think we should have to suffer the consequences. Let the good people of the U.S. bail us out so we can continue having our cake and eating it too."
Okay, well let's get down to the homeowner. "Well, they said I could afford a $565k loan. I know I only make $45k a year. But if I'm gonna live in a home like this, I have to have a car to match the neighborhood. And nobody here mows their own yard... sheesh! If they're gonna tell me I can afford it, then they better make sure I can afford it, by golly. Now I'm in this mess and can't afford my payments any more. Uncle Sam's gotta bail me out. How about a full-scale house loan restructure where the government gets my payments down to where they're more manageable? After all, it's not my fault, it's theirs for loaning me the money in the first place. Hey, it's my tax dollars they'd be using anyway."
Where's this going to end? If we're going to make our bed then we better be ready to sleep in it. Our country tells on itself every time the polls open - "We want money, regardless of ability, integrity or overall vision. Whoever will provide the most money today gets my vote."
Well, America's been sleeping long enough. She'll either wake up and start acting responsibly, or be carried out in chains. Right now it looks like the latter. Say goodbye to the great experiment and hello to full-scale socialism.
Cheers!
